Last year the Illinois Family Institute failed a petition drive to get on the ballot a state constitutional amendment banning gay marriage due to not enough signatures. In a poll 51% were opposed to it anyway with only 40% supporting.
The new news is that an openly gay state rep has filed legislation that would repeal the existing law against same-sex marriage, explicitly allow same-sex couples to marry, and affirm religious organizations' right to decline to marry a couple if it's against their beliefs to do so.
