Carl Rogers conference day 1
Jul. 25th, 2002 12:03 pmThis is an amazing gathering. Over 300 people are here at UCSD on the occasion of Carl Rogers' 100th birthday (nb: he died in '85). The conveners felt that the best way to honor Rogers was to bring together people from all the disciplines he influenced. There's 9 major tracks scheduled, 3 per day: Counseling & Psychotherapy, K-12 ed, Higher ed, Politics & Diversity, Health & Spirituality, Peace & Conflict Resolution, Expressive Arts, Organizational Transformation, and Research. Wow.
Many (most?) of the world's leading practitioners, educators, writers and researchers in the Person-Centered Approach are here. Two California State Senators are attending, one of whom has spent his career implementing Rogers' idea in California state government -- "The Politics of Trust Network", which emerged from an initiative to improve quality of worklife for all state employees.
Lots of friends/colleagues of mine are here -- from Chicago, Boston, Glasgow, ADPCA meetings, the PCA Forum in Johannesburg, and the PCA email list. When I arrived last night I had quite a successful time walking around and hooking into groups through people I know, and having some good one-on-ones. Maybe even started a couple new connections.
Still, I'm having trouble feeling involved. Partly because I feel out of my league in a way I didn't feel at past ADPCA meetings, partly because I've been overhungry and overtired so far today.
There's a good amount of unstructured community time and Open Space in the program, so I'm planning to make a pitch to convene a discussion about the potentials of combining touch therapy and talk therapy. That might be very significant to my long-term professional process... hope something comes of it.
Off to lunch now!
