Twilight, day 3 [afternoon]
Oct. 18th, 2003 12:03 am[10/12]
Kitchen shift this morning, hence up very early, but got enough sleep to not be zombified. Made two separate bone-headed mistakes in front of Walter, which he got over immediately -- "That's the challenge in my job, keeping up with you guys!" (ie explaining things he's done a thousand times to people who've done them zero times, and then supervising people enough to head off any mistakes in progress.)
For clan time, a fresh start -- we've passed our biggest clan responsibility for the weekend. No drums this time, just jamming with sticks and shakers, leaving lots of room to listen and create space for others. Very sweet and mellow.
I started out playing my little rhythm frog, which found a great place at the end of the measure for a while. Then I picked up two of the long, thin sticks, listened to the pattern for where to come in, and felt a huge upwelling of potential beats and riffs that could be added. I listened for a while to the potential overlaying the real, picked something and tried it, didn't like how it went, listened some more, came in again and took it from there.
The start of something new! That path leads to jamming, which I haven't been able to do. I'm very good at picking up rhythms and holding them steadily, but have had no sense of where the creative aspect would come from in me. Until now. Very cool!
Walter was walking by me at lunch and I called him over to say, "Thanks for making the run into town for the hot cider this morning, it was unbelievably tasty." He gave me a funny look for a moment, said "Thank you" in a voice that said he was touched, and we chatted for a bit. I'm pretty sure he thought I was going to say something about screwing up at breakfast, and was gratified to see that instead of being caught up in that I was acknowledging his thoughtfulness.
