According to the Baby Name Wizard widget, he most common baby names in the 70s were Michael and Jennifer. This makes sense to me -- those would be the two I'd have picked as most likely to get one cited for a misdemeanor for shouting them in a crowded room.

As of 2003, the most common baby names are... Emily and Jacob?!? *boggle*

I had the pleasure today of introducing this widget to a co-worker who's in baby-naming mode right now. Satisfying.

I can't speak to the popularity of "Jacob", but there are definitely a lot of Emilys among the current undergrads I know.

It was disturbing, in my years at UMass in the late 80s/early 90s, to hear the word "Jacob!" spoken (or shouted) in the grocery store, turning around-
-to see a woman addressing a very small boy. The trend has continued through the 90s. I'd been the only Jacob in both school and Hebrew school, but now...? Interestingly enough, the name isn't being shortened to 'Jake' all that much anymore. I mean, I never have, but lots of others used to.
