mud_puppy got offered an interview at a potential new job! Yay sweetie!!!
-I have ordered one of the new gumdrop iMacs that were just announced last month. I took
mud_puppy with me to The Apple Store last week to show it off to her and generally bounce around with glee. It's got a beautiful flat-panel screen. It's got a combination CD-R/DVD player (I don't own a TV, so being able to watch movies on it is a nice plus). It's got better digital-photo organizing software than came with my camera. It's more than fast enough to run the spiffiest new games I'm interested in (Civ III, Black & White). AND, like all current Macs, it's got Unix under the hood, which is my computer-field expertise. It might arrive as early as the 5th! Whee!
-I learned from a Wired magazine article last week that the leading edge of AI, always the purview of academic research institutions, has firmly shifted to the computer game industry. It's where most of the AI PhD's are going. This makes total sense and blows my mind at the same time. It's very amusing to think that computer sentience will someday emerge, not from the military or a private AI lab as in most SF scenarios, but from Nintendo or Blizzard.
