Yup, this made me mad
Sep. 8th, 2005 07:47 pmAn account by two paramedics caught in New Orleans who banded together with dozens of others trying to walk out of the city, and were stopped several times by local sherrifs who'd camped out at the highway on-ramps to keep their towns from becoming refugee camps. Police actions described include shots fired in the air, guns waved in faces, large groups broken up, and *supplies of food and water stolen*. I believe it, and I'm beyond appalled.
I'm starting to get ripples that this disaster may galvanize the political power of the underprivelaged in this country. I certainly hope so. Bush and the Republican Congress have proven that it's a winning strategy to govern just in the interests of big business and rich people, which are of course best able to reward the strategy with more money. At this point the only counterbalancing force I can imagine is the collective fury of the oppressed.
