anti-update on the outsourcing thread
Jul. 7th, 2006 12:41 pmI didn't even imagine that the following was a possible outcome. My employer will not be outsourcing its IT department after all. They said they failed to find 15% of savings for the company in every year of the proposed contract, so they didn't sign.
All we know so far is that announcement, so what the picture will look like going forward is not yet clear. I'm worried it'll be a bleak "always do more with less" regime in which it will be impossible to do things like travel for training or attend professional conferences. (We used to be required to attend one per year.)
I had been looking forward to the outsourcing, frankly. I was confident of getting a reasonable offer from the other company, and I saw it as an opportunity to grow out of my current position by learning to do things the new company needed me to do, in addition to my familiar job of supporting my ex-employer-now-client.
I'll see what things look like as the dust settles. But if the right opportunity jumps in my lap in the meanwhile I might well grab it.

Date: 2006-07-07 06:03 pm (UTC)I feel a little sorry for your employer; they're going to lose big on this one. I suspect that their turnover going to spike, and the quality of their support drop, over these months, for exactly the reason you describe; you're likely one of the least flustered by such things people around, and if you're noticeably more likely to jump ship ... :-J
